The Pangea Video
updated March 22, 2008

The Pangea video was obtained by Friends of the Earth in the UK and released to Australian media in December 1998 by nuclear campaigner Jean McSorley. Never intended for public viewing, the video was being used as a lobbying tool to build support within the Australian government.

The video introduces the idea that nuclear waste is in fact a serious unresolved problem, and a global search for suitable geology for a dump has zeroed in on the Centralian Superbasin area of central Australia. Australia is also described as a suitable target due to our stable democratic and legal institions, established engineering infrastructure and a desire to help the world with a serious problem.

Snazzy 3D graphics show the earth opening up to reveal a 10 x 2km underground dump somewhere in the desert. The Australian outback is depicted in several scenes as flat, sterile and extremely un-attractive - the not-so-subtle message is that this is wasteland, uninhabited and eminently suitable for concentrating the industrial world's poisons.

"They still think it's Terra Nullius" commented one Aboriginal elder on viewing the video. The irony of a British-funded company using the illusion of 'empty land' to dump its unwanted refuse is not lost on the Aboriginal communities of the area.
